Sustainable power and mining in Chile

Enel Green Power has developed a number of wind, solar and geothermal projects in Chile as well as a hybrid power plant for the Ollagüe Village combining photovoltaic (PV), wind, battery storage, and diesel.

Talk of sustainability in mining is lip service

Mining creates waste, which causes social and environmental harm, particularly water contamination and air pollution. The consequences are often insidious and the harm becomes obvious only decades later, as with silicosis and acid mine drainage in South Africa. Silicosis, an incurable lung disease caused by the inhalation of dust, is so prevalent that it is classified as a public health issue. Acid mine drainage, caused by the release of sulphuric acid from minerals such as pyrite into the water table, is a leading cause of water pollution.

Alternative power solutions for the Zambian mining industry

In recent years, an ongoing drought has caused a severe power crisis in Zambia. The new analysis Power crisis and consequences for solar energy in the Zambian mining sector from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in its role as facilitator of the Project Development Programme (PDP) and THEnergy, shows that the framework conditions for investments in solar have become more attractive.

Harvard scientists find clean, new way of mining rare earths

Scientists at Harvard University in the US have developed a method to separate rare earths, a group of 17 elements used in advanced electronics, defence and renewable energy, that promises to put an end to the ‘dirty business’ label until now tied to the mining of such key ingredients.
