NUM issued a statement in relation to a Section 189A process at the South African construction and engineering operating group of Aveng.
Aveng Grinaker-LTA has been formally engaging with its representative unions, being the NUM, NUMSA and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), since October 2017, in a CCMA-facilitated Section 189A retrenchment process, in terms of which 120 permanent hourly-paid positions in the Aveng Grinaker-LTA building business unit are currently affected, mostly due to projects coming to an end. The number quoted in the NUM statement of 2 863 is the total headcount of wage earning employees in Aveng Grinaker-LTA, not the number of employees affected by this retrenchment process.
‘We have informed the NUM of the error in the statement and they have undertaken to look into it,’ reads a media statement from Aveng.
‘It is in the ordinary nature of a contracting business such as ours that headcount is entirely dependent on available construction project work. Therefore, employees are engaged when projects commence and will be laid off as and when projects come to an end unless new project work is secured to offset such layoffs.’
