The facility is designed to improve the quality of mathematics learning and teaching of over 1 300 learners at Mamello Secondary School. The facility is an information and communications technology (ICT) enabled mathematics laboratory which intends to enhance the learning experience for the students by making it interactive and enjoyable, therefore addressing the notion that mathematics is difficult and abstract.

“We believe that this facility will enhance mathematics education in the local communities and develop a pipeline of learners that are able to succeed in careers which require mathematics and science,” says Sibanye CEO, Neal Froneman.

The facility is resourced with an electronic board, 40 tablets, a laptop for the teachers and other manipulative tools. Sibanye-Stillwater invested about R1.4-million on the mathematics laboratory as well as the installation of a borehole to reduce the school’s water and electricity bill.

Since 2013, Sibanye-Stillwater has spent more than R13.2-million in mathematics and science basic education in learners’ support, teacher development and infrastructure development in the Free State and Gauteng benefiting over 780 learners in grades 10 to 12 annually.

“We are pleased that jobs were created through local SMMEs during the construction this project. We trust that our partnership with the Department of Education, and with a particular focus on providing high quality mathematics and science education, we will continue to develop the skills necessary for technical sectors such as mining,” concludes Froneman.
