Kazakhstan - Production ramps up at Aktogay

KAZ Minerals has produced its first saleable copper concentrate from sulphide ore at the Aktogay project. According to the company, shipments of concentrate from Aktogay are imminent. The Aktogay sulphide concentrator will now ramp up with the target of achieving commercial levels of output in the second half of 2017.

Indonesia - Grasberg on ice

Shares in New York listed Freeport McMoRan, the world’s largest listed copper miner, dropped recently after the company decided to halt operations at its Grasberg Mine in Indonesia. Freeport’s local unit, which has not been able to ship copper from the mine in over a month due to a ban on concentrate exports that kicked in on 12 January, stated that it has begun sending workers home, Reuters reported.

Bald Mountain’s extended life

Canadian based Kinross Gold Corporation continues to develop the Bald Mountain Mine in Nevada, US, with the aim of extending the mine life and increasing production. At the end of 2016, Kinross doubled Bald Mountain’s proven and probable mineral reserve estimates to 2.1 million ounces (Moz) of gold (Au), adding a total of 1.24Moz Au, with about 0.68Moz Au from the Bald Mountain Mine North area and about 0.57Moz Au from the South area.
