Botswana shines brightly in mining

Diamonds and coal, among many other resources, are what makes Botswana stand out as a nation. We pay tribute to its mining industry, and take a closer look at the present situation.


Venetia challenges the status quo

Development at diamond giants De Beers’ Venetia mine close to Musina in the Limpopo province is unique in a number of ways. Mining continues while shaft development takes place near to the existing open pit. In addition, the shaft sinking method has not been used in many other projects in South Africa.


Finch unleashes mechanised bolters

Work at the new block 5 sub-level cave development at Petra Diamond’s Finsch Diamond Mine in the Northern Cape continues unabated. The JSE- and London-listed company recently purchased a fleet of four new Sandvik dry drilling bolters to support mining operations at the new development.


Bakubung prepares for production

Four years since the production phase kicked off at Wesizwe Platinum’s Bakubung mine near Rustenburg on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex, the project is set to deliver first ore from the Merensky reef by the end of 2017.
