Diamond drilling at ASX listed West African Resources’ Sanbrado gold project in Burkina Faso has returned high-grade results. According to Richard Hyde, MD at West African Resources, two contractor rigs are currently drilling at the M1 South prospect, while two company-owned rigs are operating at the M5 site.

Canadian exploration company East Africa Metals’ (EAM’s) diamond drilling programme at the Harvest Project’s Mayshehagne VMS and VTEM09 prospects in Ethiopia has delivered encouraging results. The company intersected 21.19m grading 4.32% copper, 1.04 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, 35.9g/t silver and 6.98% zinc.

Africa’s titanium pigment market will soon have a new player following the conclusion of a technology partnership between Nyanza Light Metals and Avertana of New Zealand. The two partners will culminate in the construction of a R4 billion titanium dioxide pigment (TiO2) production plant in the Richards Bay industrial development zone (IDZ).

Steenkampskraal Holdings has once again confirmed the presence of extremely high grades of thorium and rare earth elements at its project close to Vredendal on the west coast of South Africa. According to Trevor Blench, chairperson at Steenkampskraal, the thorium (Th) and rare earth elements (REEs) are the highest grades in the world. “At an average of 2.14% Th and 14.4% REE, with REEs in some areas as high as 45% TREO + Y2O3 [total rare earth oxide + yttrium oxide], this is an impressive deposit,” says Blench.

JSE listed DRDGOLD has commissioned two new reclamation sites in the south and in the east of Johannesburg. Reclaimed slimes from 4L2 alongside the M2 freeway, south-east of Johannesburg’s CBD — which contains more than 11.9 million tonnes (Mt) of material at 0.30 grams per tonne (g/t) — will be piped to the company’ City Deep processing plant at a rate of 300 000 tonnes per month (tpm), and then to the Ergo plant for gold extraction.
